Information for prospective Worship Service Assistants

at Light of the Cross

At Light of the Cross Lutheran church, we believe that a person may find their experience at Worship to be heightened if they can contribute by assisting in some capacity with the service.

You are invited to indicate your interests on a Time and Talent Offering card. It can be turned in to the church office, or put into the marked box on the narthex counter.

If you are unable to serve after you have been scheduled, we ask that you please find a substitute. If you are unable to find a substitute, please call the Church office (425-485-8974) as soon as possible.

Greeter

In this role you set the opening note for a visitor's experience at LOTC. You are in a position to make them feel welcome and comfortable as they have decided to worship with us this week.

Stand next to the outside narthex door and greet all people coming in. It is preferable to stand outside the door on nice days. If you believe they may be new to the church, ask them if they would like to know anything, such as the location of the nursery or restrooms. Invite them to stay after the service for cookies and coffee. Give new people visitor packets.

It will not be necessary to introduce the new visitors during the service.

After the service, make sure the visitors are talking with someone and do so yourself if no one else is. As much as you feel comfortable, also look to see if anyone else is by themselves and talk with them.

Adjust the above guidelines to fit your comfort level, but remember that when you are greeter your first job is to make everyone feel welcome. This may mean that you won't be talking to the people you normally talk with.

Provide Altar Flowers

You can sign up on the calendar in the hallway to be responsible for the altar flowers for a particular day. This can be annotated with a note that this is a gift in observance of a special occasion (anniversary, family member birthday, in memory of a departed loved one. etc.)

If you wish, you may bring the flowers in a vase of your own, or you may find vases in the church kitchen or you may use the brass vases that match the other altar furniture. The brass insets can be taken home so you can arrange the flowers ahead of time to bring in on Sunday morning.

Altar Guild

Prepare the altar by removing spent flowers, filling candles and changing of the paraments as the season dictates.

Childrens' Sermon

The Children's sermon is a respected segment of each Sunday's worship service. A person with no other prerequisite than a willingness to relate to our young people is given five to eight minutes to talk with them about the Gospel or other scriptures for the week, read a book to them, or talk about what you feel compelled by the Spirit.
You don't need to worry about speaking loud for the congregation, or about approval from the congregation. The primary object is your conversation with God's children.
